Le Mura Poligonali

MURA POLIGONALI
Murapoligonali4Polygonal Walls The ring of defensive walls that encloses the acropolis was erected during the end of the 6th Century b.C. in opus poligonalis. Such technique provided for the walls to be built by using enormous irregular limestone blocks without the use of mortar. Then they would lean an embankment against the internal part of the blocks. All around the ring of wall two big gates and a small door would allow the passage. They all were restored by the Colonna family during the 12th Century, when they also added a set of turrets in order to strengthen the site fortification.
